Highlighting artists receiving fewer than fifty MySpace listens each day, but deserving of so many more.

Under 50 – How To Dress Well Under 50

Everyone enjoys music differently whether it be in the car, stoned on the couch, at the gym, or in a cafe. In this process of experiencing someone’s creation, we are manifesting our own desires and fears as we listen. This is why music is so important. It is a cathartic process that everyone experiences and takes from whether they know it or not.

Thanks to Delicious Scopitone, I have found something that is going to define the next era of my life. How To Dress Well(HTDW) have been appearing all over the webdar. I realize bands come and go, but I really believe HTDW have something special to offer us. On the first listen I thought my speakers were blown, but I put headphones on and experienced bliss for the next few hours. They have released, for free, six EPs on their own blog and it doesn’t seem like they are slowing down. Keep them in your ears for the next few months and watch something beautiful happen.

Under 50 – Larry Gus Under 50

Summer is upon us. It truly is. It might not feel like it, but we know great things are about to happen. Hollywood blockbusters, sweltering festivals, and cut off shorts. To be honest, I am most excited for cut offs and Larry Gus. Larry Gus is Panagiotis Melidis whose new album Stitches just came out on Cast-A-Blast Records. Panagiotis emailed us to say that he is “just a guy from Greece… living in Barcelona working on The Freesound Project.” I think Panagiotis is more than just a guy, he is the sound of summer. His audio snippets are going to be blaring from my battery operated boom box while I bike to the beach. Watch his videos, you’ll be doing the same thing.

Under 50 – Summer Twins Under 50

June is so close. As the rainy Seattle spring continues to flirt with summer I find myself drawn more and more toward bright, sun-washed music. It was the Summer Twins‘ video for their song ‘The Good Things’ that nailed that unobtainable summer feeling that I am seeking.

From what I have gleaned from their Myspace site, sorry if that sounds creepy, Summer Twins are Chelsea and Justine Brown. Live they are supported by Angelo Anderson and Marcio Rivera. What makes this band special to me is their combination of beautiful vocals and rough, yet incredibly tasteful, guitar melodies. It looks like they have a show Memorial Day weekend, so all of you Riverside, CA folks should get out and support them.

Under 50 – Busman’s Holiday Under 50

BMH Press Photo

Busman’s Holiday is a two-piece band, Lewis Rogers and Addison Rogers, with a rotating string and woodwinds section. I keep thinking to myself: ‘Hey, they really remind me of someone,’ but I just can’t pinpoint it. The band does have a pristine sense for harmonies (through instruments or vocals) and musical clarity. In the video that first caught my attention, they are a three-piece string section as well as the Rogers brothers, all tucked into a pink couch for If You Make It’s Pink Couch live videos series.

Currently they are joined by a violinist and a clarinet-and-tenor-sax player. The band was recently featured on the highly acclaimed Daytrotter Sessions. The voices are haunting on this recording. I’ve always been a fan of brothers and sisters singing together; the harmonies are so cohesive, sometimes almost undetectable. With the brothers Rogers this is just the case.

Bloomington, Indiana owes bands like this for making its scene so notable (i.e. the Delicious, Good Luck (playing Healthy Times Fun Club in Seattle on May 22), the Native Young).

Under 50 – Tennis Under 50

I want to tell you a story about Tennis, but first I need to tell you about yoga. I don’t know that much about yoga. I have been a few times and I would like to make it a regular habit. The last Introduction to Yoga class I went to focused on the backside of our bodies. My back was curved inward and outward, my neck was stretched to lengthen my spine, and my lower back was aching from the pressure. My mind was clear and our teacher started to paint the portrait of our back being like sails that were catching the wind. In between poses he would remind us that the wind had shifted. Things were about to change physically and spiritually, new adventures awaited.

This is the story of Tennis. Alaina and Patrick currently reside in landlocked Denver, Colorado where they decided to follow a dream of sailing the seas. Looking for nothing, but gaining the inspiration create and inspire. Their winds have shifted over time, but they are to create joyous songs and share them with anyone who will listen. This is the story of Tennis.

Under 50 – Delicate Steve Under 50

Delicate Steve is the project of Steve Marion. I was immediately drawn towards Delicate Steve through the track ‘Butterfly’. The energy, driving-speed and addictive guitar melody would not exit my head days after a casual listen on Myspace. After returning to their page I listened to more of the tracks online and took a gander at some of their live videos. Hot damn, that looks like a fun show.

Delicate Steve’s album ‘Wondervisions’ came out in December of ‘09 on compact disc and iTunes, but will be reissued on vinyl this summer with some bonus tracks included on the record. Delicate Steve will also be playing an east coast tour in July, and just collaborated on a track with Dustin Wong of Ponytail/Ecstatic Sunshine, which will be out this summer.

Under 50 – Khingz Under 50

Welcome to South Seattle. The 206.  It is more than grey skies and grey buildings; the rain brings a constant flush of green.  The emerald city.  The graffiti licks the walls city wide, constantly being painted over and tagged again.  The vines growing up brick buildings matches the speed new art is thrown up.  All of this is growing upwards and outwards, being taken down and then replaced.   The art and flora is stronger and more resistant with every line, every vine.  Khingz is the sound of this growth.  His music is centrally Seattle, yet reaching international sounds.  His rhymes exemplify the art of this growth.  Check him out Saturday, April 3rd, at the Coolout TV showcase at the Crocodile.
