CANDY CLAWS

Candy Claws have created something that leaves the listener speechless.
“In the Dream of the Sea Life” by Candy Claws was recorded in Italy, Fort Collins, and the Philippines over the past two years. The album is a musical companion to Rachel Carson’s 1951 book, “The Sea Around Us.” The 10-song cd comes packaged in a full-color dvd case, complete with a 12-page art booklet, a sticker, and a handmade art print.
Brilliant.

The Black Whales

Driving back to Seattle from Federal Way last December I was faced with a musical quandary. Should I listen to Andrew Bird for the 83rd time in a row, or hope that there is something decent on the radio? With hopeful trepidation I tuned into kexp – a very solid choice.
The Black Whales were playing some irresistibly catchy and well-crafted songs. And they had some top-notch banter, which is always a pleasant bit of knowledge to have about a band, right?
This Seattle-based foursome describes their music as “Flowers on drugs. Warm hearted spaghetti-westerns.” Yesssss. And it sounds good.
They have some shows coming up in the NW – check their myspace. And they have an ep available for free download on their website.

M. Pyres

Colorado gets over 300 days of sunshine a year. It’s no wonder that M. Pyres‘ Matthew Sage has invented a category of music titled: “Sky Gaze”. M. Pyres started in late 2008 when Matthew Sage closed up shop on his former band Castles. M. Pyres’ sound is a complete departure from Castles’ ambient, atmouspheric sound; a departure that has garnered much attention towards the Fort Collins based 5 piece. On Wednesday March 25th, M. Pyres will be opening for Abe Vigoda and Women in Denver, Colorado. If you will be in or around Denver tomorrow, GO TO THIS SHOW!

In the meantime pacify yourselves with some tracks from M. Pyres’ freshman album: consider me, ghost*. M. Pyres has also passed on the word that a second album is in the works. You can catch a couple demos from the album on their myspace page.

The Nine Tailors

The Nine Tailors describe themselves as a “Narrative-Driven” band. Named after the 18th century England traditional tolling of nine low-ringing bells that resonate following a man’s death, The Nine Tailors have made an EP that is as pleasing to the ears as it is edifying to the mind. Lyrically it is clear that the band is heavily influenced by the works of Flannery O’ Connor and Ernest Hemingway. Musically I hear Modest Mouse, White Flight (opening vocals on South Pacific) and at times, dare I say, Deerhoof. The Nine Tailors are based out of Seattle, WA. Their 5-track EP is set for release June 2009. If you are eager to hear the band early and will be in Seattle, they will be playing at the Fremont Abbey on April 11th.

What’s so exciting about Connecticut?
This short documentary is an in-depth look into the CT music scene. Either that or it is another slap-in-the-face by those Yo La Tengo jokers and their awesome new side project Condo Fucks.
BLACK METAL FRIDAY – IMMORTAL – Call of the Wintermoon BLACK METAL FRIDAY
Welcome to the first of a ten part series- BLACK METAL FRIDAY. It’s similar to casual Friday, except there are less Hawaiian shirts and a bit more face paint involved. And did I mention the fire eaters? Oh yeah.
Uesa Guilbe

Uesa Guilbe. Incredible. “Parting” almost made my eyes tear up. At first I assumed that this free form music project happened through happenstance. How wrong I was. After finishing aftereachother* I have quickly come to realize that whoever is steering this ship is in complete control of every blend, key change and sample used to orchestrate this music. Uesa Guilbe is based out of Seattle, WA; although I believe they hold ties to Fort Collins, CO Boulder, CO.
